The Employee by joshua schwebel

publication request

dear ████,
I am writing with a somewhat unusual request.
Since 2020 I have been working on a long term artwork reflecting on the substructural work of grant-writing relative to artistic practice. The project, entitled The Employee, is funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. The first stage of the project involved a year-long delegated performance in which I redirected project funding to hire a grant writer in order to supplement the fundraising capacities of Forest City Gallery. The second part of the work will be a publication of the materials that this performance generated, part of which is an archive of the complete collection of emails generated by this process. This archive will be reproduced online.

This is where you come in. My employee, Camille-Zoé Valcourt-Synnott, was in contact with you while completing an application for LCF funding. While their emails had an appended signature informing recipients that their emails might be used in subsequent documentation, I would like to be prudent and check for peoples' consent. I have appended the emails in question below. I have redacted email addresses and names, but if there is any further redaction required, please let me know. This archive is massive, and contains over 2000 individual emails. While I have isolated the emails that concern you particularly, I want to add this caveat so you don't feel singled out or put on the spot.
I am open to your suggestions for how to proceed.
my best,
Joshua Schwebel

Joshua,

Thank you for reaching out and you are welcome to include the email messages in the form you shared. No further redaction is necessary.

It’s disappointing – and somewhat telling of the grant world/system – that the project didn’t result in increased capacity for the Gallery. Please be clear – I don’t mean that as a reflection of the Gallery or The Employee. You’re addressing a challenge that so many organizations face. I would appreciate the opportunity to be notified when the publication is ready.

Thanks for your considerate approach. All the best as you complete this project! ████
