The conversations were simply people asking questions about the state of arts labour and indicating that they didn't realize it can be so bad. Not sure how to synthesize that to make it more interesting for the reader.

I am a bit confused here, because my first reaction as a reader is to ask, which quote. I think this indication could be made more specific, either by naming the authors or by specifying that you mean the epigraph leading the text.

Agreed - change to "the epigraph quote"

I would be extremely interested to hear an example of this. Audience response is one aspect missing from the book and it seems like Teresa could really contribute to that here.

This intro does a great job of laying out a premise of overwork, but doesn’t affirm it beyond a projection. Can you substantiate / confirm your suspicions that you would have your work cut out for you? I just think this paragraph leads up to the point of saying something, but doesn’t follow through.

this can be as simple as "I am working at my limits", or I work well beyond xx hours per week.

Is some further information needed here, or do we assume that the reader will know. I suppose I am curious to know what it is now - 5-10 years and a PhD to be a Director?

Yes, I do think we need some specifics. Especially considering how useful the stats in the earlier paragraph are.
