Dear Lauren,

Apologies for my delay with this - I've been travelling a bit, and have recently had a data-loss catastrophe with Goldsmiths, which was hosting most of my files as I was using a work computer. The whole institution is barely functioning as it is, so I don't expect a good outcome here.

Unfortunately, due to this situation, and the teaching load I have here in Berlin, as well as finishing my edited book right now, along with a number of other commitments and my health, I don't think I can do any further rounds of editing. I hope you understand.

all the best,

Marina

dear Marina,
I am so sorry to hear that you are having to deal with this. It sounds like an absolute nightmare!
If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.
As far as the text is concerned, Lauren and I spoke, and our proposition will be forthcoming shortly in a separate email, but I just wanted to say how awful this must be for you.
Also, my apologies for not writing earlier. I just returned to Berlin after an exhibition in Canada, and needed a bit of time to recover.
I imagine you must be exhausted and short on time, but as we are both currently in Berlin it would be a great pleasure to invite you, and your partner, over for dinner, or for any other connection while you are here. But not to add any pressure, only if that would be nice.
x

Dear Marina,

Please allow me to echo Josh’s sympathy. I have complete respect for your need to triage work under difficult circumstances. Josh and I are still very committed to publishing your excellent essay and would like to propose a way forward that will allow us to get it into its best from, while also respecting your need to pull back from the project.

Our proposal is that I take forward the completion of the final draft, focusing only on copy editing, minimal re-wording for clarity, and drafting of citations. My goal would be to give the text a final polish with a light touch, not to alter your language or argument in any way. Once complete, I would send the text to you for sign off.

If this seems to you like a possible way forward, I would be grateful if you were able to meet me for 30-45 minutes over Zoom, during which we would go through a few brief questions I have about the text and sources. This time would be super helpful in allowing me to bring you a final draft quickly and with accuracy.

I very much hope this could be a possible solution, as we are so invested in your text. Please let me know if you have any questions or further thoughts on our proposal.

With warmest wishes,

Lauren
