Hi Teresa,
So ██████ just wrote back. She has decided to take the other job.
I am cursed but not feeling totally hopeless...
Hope you’re having an ok weekend.
Ps █████ ████████ ██ ███ ███████ 😩

Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com> To: Teresa Carlesimo <██████████████████████████ >

PPS, should we reconsider ████?

Teresa Carlesimo <██████████████████████████ >

Hi Josh,

That's super sad news about ██████, but I'm ultimately not surprised. I do think we should revisit ████
████ ███ ██████████ ███████. I'm sorry.

My best,
Teresa

Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com>

hey Teresa,
I hope you are well.
I am writing to let you know that I have some news!
I just spoke with Camille Valcourt-Synnott about the position. Although she is based in Halifax, she is super interested and enthusiastic about the project and is available and looking for work. I gave her a full run-down on what we need and what is expected in the position, and also the bitter history of our open call fiasco(s).
I have worked with her in the past and she is very precise, proactive and motivated. She is an excellent problem solver, and for example, offered to apply to get her own funding to find a way to travel to London to do the in-person aspect of the project at some point in the future.
If you have time on Tuesday to meet with me, it would be good to talk more about this possibility, and if you are open to it, the three of us could meet over zoom and see how it could work.
The most promising aspect of this is that I know I can trust Camille to do an excellent job, to manage her own time, and to care deeply about the goals of the project. She also recognizes that she could gain useful experience and knowledge through the project. As well, I would love to work with her again.
I guess even though we reached a total impasse with the open call and interview process, it has led me in this new direction, which, although not ideal given the in-person requirement of the project, also gives me a lot of hope.
Anyways, let me know what you think!
and have a good weekend,
best.
Josh

Hi Josh,

Thanks so much for this update. I think that your confidence in, and enthusiasm for, Camille is really great, and I support this direction.
Unfortunately, I'm unable to meet on Tuesday, are we able to connect on Wednesday instead? At present, I'm totally free.

My best,

Teresa Carlesimo (she/her)

Hi Teresa,
No problem whatsoever to meet Wednesday. Would you like to speak just the two of us about this idea further, or would it make sense to set up a meeting with Camille and then discuss between us once you have a concrete sense of her character and capacities?
Warmly,
Josh

Teresa Carlesimo <██████████████████████████ >

Hi Josh,

Thanks for being flexible. I say let's dive in and introduce me to Camille on Wednesday! Let me know what time works best for you both.

My best,
Teresa

Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com>

Great!
I will get back to you with a potential time.
Thanks so much,
x

Hi Teresa,
So Camille is free on Wednesday at 11am your time. Would that work for you?
If so, would you be able to set up a zoom meeting? Her email is
Thanks so much,
Josh

hi Teresa,
I know that this is a bit of a sudden plunge after so many efforts to hire someone through a careful open call, but I appreciate your openness and hope that it works out better than last time. While Camille doesn't have much previous experience, which I recognize is a cause for some uncertainty, she does have a much better grounding in the field, the context, and the vocabulary than █████.
Moreover, I have rarely encountered anyone who has engaged more sincerely in any job she is given, and I am really sure that she will do her best.
I think this is going to need some jumping in, but I have a much better feeling... I also think we hit a wall with the open call, and needed to take another approach.
How do you feel about this decision?
thanks so much and talk soon,
Josh

Teresa Carlesimo <██████████████████████████ >

Hi Josh,

Thanks for checking in. I actually feel really good about this. Much, much more confident with the position/project than I was feeling two-three weeks ago. I hope you're feeling good about it too. The geography is obviously disappointing, but we can make something work that I hope you will be satisfied with.
And FYI, I had a free moment, so I've already requested association for Camille with FCG through the CCA portal—hopefully that's processed quickly—and forwarded her materials from the last CCA grant for her review, so she's now ready to get those first steps started.

Until soon,

Teresa Carlesimo (she/her)

Hi Teresa,
Ok good. I am glad you feel ok about this. I was regretting that we didn’t meet in advance to strategize how to conduct this meeting, since I think it would have given you more confidence had we asked Camille some questions, but for my part I feel very happy to have a chance to work with Camille again, and am also feeling more secure than I have in quite some time about the fate of the project and the potential for the position to ‘work’.
I concur that the geography is not ideal, but I think that we can figure out some chances for Camille to work in the gallery in person once we start working together.
Until soon, and as always thanks so much,
Josh
