As someone who has been involved with artist-run centres over the past 15 years in various roles, I felt deeply affected by Joshua Schwebel’s project The Employee. Observing a performance work (via an online livestreamed link) by Camille-Zoe Valcourt Synnott – hired as a grant writer to support the operational objectives of the gallery, was a ‘performance’ I was very familiar with as an arts worker. The Employee extends beyond the circulation of symbolic value of an artwork. By making the work undertaken by arts workers visible, the performance reveals the essential administrative labour of gallery staff, and the funding structures artist run centres operate within. The Employee highlighted a kind of promise of something we are working towards in the future. The cumulative hours of various contracts (paid and unpaid) we’ve undertaken for the promise of prospective opportunities, alongside the promise of pending funding applications. There’s a cognitive dissonance to how scarcity has us believing that we should be grateful that we have these jobs rather than actively working towards a dismantling of the systems that keep us confined within structures that benefit very few. Our participation is often future oriented. It’s the promise of being rewarded with possibilities and opportunities in the future, and in the hopes of building towards something better. Working in this way leads to a state of physical and emotional depletion. It takes a toll. It’s well known that specific demographics— black, indigenous, and racialized women, working class, queer, and disabled, are disproportionately impacted.
