Specificity would be good here: exactly what kind of arts funding, and how is it a different pot of money from labour expenses. Maybe even only one new word is necessary, like "project funding", but that doesn't feel like exactly the right word.

The Employee

I would like to set a up a rule for the book around how we punctuate the title of the project versus Camille's title, so it doesn't seem as reading like a typo (like italics are missing). Of course, as a title it will be first letter in caps and all italics, but when it is Camille we could either do "the Employee" or "the employee". I cam inclined to the second. What do you think?

"the performance of the work by the employee"
is staffed by a single employee. This arrangement is ongoing: Teresa Carlesimo succeeded Matt Kyba as Director in April, 2020.

Lauren Wetmore

• 1:45 PM, Dec 29 (CET)

New

It would be interesting to note here how long this has been going on. Was the director before Matt also the sole employee?

I'm interested in "remaining" - were there other spaces that have been shut down?

Josh Schwebel

• 1:23 PM, Nov 8 (CET)
there are spaces that have been short-lived / there are other structures that follow project-space models, or haven't gotten operational funding and so don't last very long, or spaces that are affiliated with the arts high school or university art program

In its current state, FCG is stuck. The centre would require a hefty funding increase to bring its budget up to what would adequately fund its operations, but a shortfall has been normalized for so long that it appears as if the centre can manage with the funding it receives–which it can, with the continued and ever-increasing contribution of unpaid overtime by its staff.

Teresa Carlesimo

• 1:13 PM, Nov 16 (CET)
This comment worries me. I can't put a fine point on it, but each time I read this intro it stands out. If I try, I think there's something about it that sounds as though the best course of action for the funders is to simply give up on FCG because it cannot be brought to the point of healthy operating funding.

But there is a knot here: there is an irresolvable overlap between art and work, or between the labour that subtends artistic work, and its valuation. This overlap accumlates further layers in artist-run culture.

Do you want to note here that the councils are apparently unaware of the discrepancy?
This gesture not only added to the workforce, although the artwork had that functional dimension, but by reduplicating it – by supplementing the (invisible) supplement, and then accumulating the traces of this secondary process, The Employee mirrored this referential structure, to make the supplement covering over the unseeable original labour deficit visible.

This sentence is difficult to follow. Could it be broken into two sentences to allow some more ease of reading?

This could be a tangent that we don't need to follow at all, but should there be a specification around "outside of commercial activities and/or private wealth"? Would it be useful to note even briefly the comparatively small field that is non-governmental money for the arts in Canada?

“use lines and strokes to cross out a draft that has been copied. Because of the ‘latticed’ appearance of the deletions, this act is referred to as ‘canceling.’ Derived from Latin cancelli grating or lattice, from which are also derived 'chancel' and 'chancellor'–the word means ‘to cross out, from crossed lattice lines drawn across a legal document, to annul it, hence destroy or delete it.’ Annulling drafts is indispensable for the operation of a chancery. After they have been copied, drafts must be crossed out so that the clean copy can become the unmistakable original.

But isn't this book a testament to moving beyond, or at least carrying on with, the process in order to make injustices visible, support the work of artists and writers, etc? Not to be too pollyanna-ish, but I do think that The Employee moves beyond exhaustion with this catalogue.

The Employee

Lauren Wetmore

• 1:34 PM, Dec 29 (CET)
I would like to set a up a rule for the book around how we punctuate the title of the project versus Camille's title, so it doesn't seem as reading like a typo (like italics are missing). Of course, as a title it will be first letter in caps and all italics, but when it is Camille we could either do "the Employee" or "the employee". I cam inclined to the second. What do you think?

Josh Schwebel

• 11:12 AM, Dec 30 (CET)
I think that is a good idea! I agree with option 2, and will add a short cue for readers to recognize this.
