hi Farah, Louis, and Miranda,
Thank you so much for having such a focussed and in-depth meeting today. I really am so grateful for your efforts to work with me to visualize this complex archive!
After Lauren's mention of data visualization, I did a bit of digging online, and came up with a couple of images of what I had in mind as a way of mapping the conversations. This image below is the closest approximation of what I had in mind, although it might make more sense to use sender / receiver names, as Farah sketched out. I just like the aesthetic of the lines and dots, and it reminds me of the head-scratcher that I mentioned.

Here is an online article in which this map is embedded that describes how they organized the material to form this map.
I hope this helps, and doesn't add more confusion!

Hi Josh,

Thanks so much for this reference. It's funny because conceptually it follows the same logic as the first proposal, but rotated 90º counter-clockwise and with a different visual "skin".

Would you be open to peoples' names being something that's revealed on an interaction (like a hover or click) instead of always visible? If yes, there's something here and in proposal #2 that could be thought through.

:)

dear Farah,
Sorry for not replying to yesterday's email. I have been working over our conversation, and the problems posed by finding a structure for the emails.
I would absolutely be into a hover or click system. I want the map-page (the front navigation diagram) to show some sort of image of the full conversation structure, so if each conversation is represented by a dot or node that would be fine by me.
I spent today making a rough spreadsheet to also try to understand how to structure the files a bit more.
It was annoying because I couldn't link to files in excel (some error with mac permissions and pdfs), so I needed to move to google sheets. I inserted links to the email files in chronological order through to the end of april 2020 for 3 conversations strands (there are still 3 to be inserted). (I had to upload folders of emails (these are still provisional, so please consider it a rough sketch, not final versions).
I have shared this with you.
What I learned from this is:
1) this is hard! -- I understand what you meant yesterday about not being able to stack things (sorry, I had only been working in my head, and not on paper, so I didn't really understand)
2) it is endless!
I think it is too much work to dump the conversations on you in folders without finishing this spreadsheet map that distributes the conversations over time. So this is what I need to do before I send it all your way.
But, I would like to know if it would be possible to have one more meeting to hammer this out a bit more. It doesn't need to be the whole team, but Farah, if you would have an hour to just talk again about how to find a structure to represent this data, I think we could get things clearer.
hugs and thank you!
Josh
