Hi Lauren and Josh!

I'm writing to introduce you to Jessica Antony, copy editor extraordinaire and all-around amazing individual. I've let Jessica know a bit about your project (The Employee) and what kind of editing might be required, but I'll let you take it away from here.

Hope this is helpful for all involved + all the best,
mark

Thanks so much for this introduction Mark!
I’ll respond to Jessica in another thread to spare your inbox.
Warmly,
Lauren

Hi Jessica,

It's great to be in touch. I think that Mark will have communicated some of the details I was able to share with him before the new year, but I’ve posted some notes again below.

It would be a great to learn more about the copy-editing work you have done in the past, and particularly what your familiarity with Chicago style as this is what we will be using. It will also be good to know about your schedule and availability.

On our end, our timeline is a bit split as we have three or four essays ready for CE now, but are still waiting on first drafts from three more essays. This might actually be ideal as it will allow for a more relaxed editing timeline.

Looking forward to hearing back,

Lauren

Notes:
- The word count will be approx. 27K
- The citation style is Chicago
- The texts will be quite clean as everyone writing/editing is also probably a copy editor
- The word count is spread between essays, back/front matter, and up to 30 image credits
- Dana Kopel will be doing the PDF proofread, so the copy editor will not need to factor that in
- The copy editor will need to focus on creating consistency across texts in vocabulary and style

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for your email. Mark has told me a bit about your project - it sounds really interesting and I’d be happy to work with you to copyedit the essays for this project. I’d love to hear more about the project itself from you as well!

In terms of my experience, I’ve been working as a copyeditor for about fifteen years. I spent a decade in the academic book publishing industry as a managing editor, during which time I helped authors develop their manuscripts for publication, as well as doing contract copyediting work. Since I left book publishing (about five years ago) I’ve been working freelance as an editor (developmental/copy and proofreading), writer, and consultant (I’ve worked with individual authors to develop their work for publication, most of whom were either academics or working in non-fiction, in addition to working on a few artist statements and texts). I also teach both academic writing and advanced editing at the University of Winnipeg. I’m familiar with APA, MLA, and Chicago styles, and have experience working with anthologies and co-authored texts (which require some work in maintaining consistency across a text while retaining the voices of individual authors).

My schedule is relatively flexible over the coming months, and could begin to take on editing work as early as January 30th. While it’s usually best to edit a collection all together, I am happy to work essay-by-essay if time is a factor. What I’d need from you is the total number of essays (it looks like 6 or 7?), the approximate word count of the front/back matter, and your timeline in terms of when you need the final copyedited texts returned. From there I could send along a contract laying all of that out, along with my rate - I charge $0.03/word for copyediting, plus GST. (So, for approximately 27,000 words, that amounts to about $850.50 [CDN]). Once the contract is squared away, you could send along the essays that are ready to go and I could get started.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I’d be happy to chat over the phone/Zoom if you’d prefer, as well.

Best,
Jessica
