dear Mariane,
I hope you are doing well. It was so lovely to catch up with you and to speak about the recent project.
I wanted to check in to see how the writing is coming along. I had proposed the end of January as a deadline for a draft, but on my end there is no need for that to be upheld. Do you have an update on your progress? There is absolutely no pressure, and I only want to keep in touch to avoid any tensions growing in communication silence.
So let me know how you are getting along, if you need any further information, etc.
I am very much looking forward to seeing your text,
all my best,
Josh

Dear Josh,

Thanks for checking in... I have been meaning to write.
First, sorry for not touching base earlier. I got COVID early January and was out of commission for 3 weeks.
I am feeling better, but am working at a reduced pace due to overall exhaustion, which I had underestimated in December. So all this to say that I appreciate the flexibility with the deadline.

I have been giving the text a lot of thought and have attached a rough outline. I don't think we discussed it, but one of the threads that I'd like to develop is the parallel between self-precarization as a form of neoliberal governance in the creative industries paradigm and self-precarization within ARC culture, which can both tied to the romanticization of artistic autonomy. In the creative industries paradigm, creativity becomes a lure (or dispositif) to discipline workers and make them accept their precarity (see the McRobbie chapters attached). In the ARC context, I'd like to explore the idea that "by artists for artists" mythology serves a similar purpose and makes it possible for those involved (in paid and/or volunteer positions) to accept a certain level of precarity. This parallel extends the notion of the gig economy of the creative industries to the project grant economy of the current funding system.

I'd love to get your thoughts on this and the other ideas in the outline.
In terms of timeline, I think that early/mid March is more realistic for me, but please let me know if that does not work with your schedule and I can readjust.

Otherwise I hope you are well and keeping busy with interesting projects.
More soon,

Mariane

Dear Mariane,
I am so sorry to read that you had covid. Of course it is very understandable that you will need more time given this information.
The outline looks exceptional. This question that you are asking is really one of the questions I often turn around — this inheritance that we have as artists of working out of love and wanting to work on what we love, versus the complete inadequacy to do so in a capitalist context, and how those fold over each other in artist-run culture. Like if an artist-run centre is an artwork in itself, ie, the product of artists’ work, then it should be pursued outside of the pecuniary interests of a salary. I really don’t know the answer to this, because on the one hand I fight to be paid for my work, but on the other hand I am disappointed in myself when I take money as a motivating factor in my artwork. I am really excited to see what you come up with, and would also love to discuss these questions with you further!
I will look at the McRobbie texts you have attached, and I think you are absolutely on the right track for the text.
I am excited to see what you come up with, and am sending you energy and also clarity to keep going with it.
Warm greetings,
Josh

Hi Josh,

I'm very glad that the ideas I'm proposing to discuss align with your own questions and thoughts around this project. I am also excited about the opportunity to explore how questions of labour, self-precarization, grant-dependency, and institutionalization intersect in artist-run centres and artist-run culture... these concepts are intricately related to my dissertation project so this text is a good opportunity to explore these ideas via a discussion of your project.

Thank you for your understanding regarding the timeline. I will keep you apprised of developments and aim for early March, but please do let me know if deadlines materialize on your end and you need me to speed things up.

Talk soon,
Mariane
